About

Welcome to The After School Special!

I’m a 16-year-old with a knack for cooking, a passion for writing, and a dream to make a difference for other kids like me around the globe.

The After School Special is both a food blog and a charity blog. Each season of the year, I focus on a new location in the world to post recipes from. Each of these locations is chosen specifically because it is home to a tremendous number of children who need support from the outside world, be it due to political unrest, famine, epidemic or any other situation.

If readers enjoy the recipes I post from a specific culture, I ask that they please make a donation — small or large — through my charity fundraiser of the season to give back to that culture. By giving the the children of these areas access to clean water, food, and books, we can help them grow up to be strong leaders of the future who promote long-term stability and peace in the world.

The theory behind The After School Special is that after literally and figuratively sharing a taste of another culture, people are more inclined to lend a helping hand because they have developed a tangible connection to those in need. Today’s world is more connected than ever before, which, to me, makes it inexcusable that some people suffer and starve while others prosper in excessive luxury. What’s lacking is a sense of human connection to our brothers and sisters of planet Earth. Compassion. And few things in life bring people together at a compassionate, personal level like sharing a meal does.
